Saturday I was fortunate enough to get out on Bogue Sound and do some kayaking along the sound side of Emerald Isle. My good friend Steve and I were mainly looking for shrimp, but I think both of us needed a good upper-body workout so we paddled from Cedar St. to Kelly St. before taking to throwing the cast nets.
We had very good luck with the shrimp, which up until Saturday, I had been getting skunked. It felt good to be able to put some shrimp into Steve’s little tub that he has all tricked out for shrimping. Sometime last year during the annual Emerald Isle shrimp season he had a great plan to modify an aluminum wash tub for shrimping purposes. It started out with a plywood lid and rubber inner-tube filled with air. The plywood lid eventually became warped and ineffective. The inner-tube also lost its ability to hold air after being punctured by shrimp. This year Steve had made this rig into the ultimate shrimp holding tank. He replaced and glassed the lid. Also he switched the inner-tube with a foam pool float. It worked GREAT, and I can’t wait to give it another run.
