It’s been the standard practice since I moved to the Emerald Isle area. The town’s police department receives all the keys for rentals that have not checked by the close of business each day from the management companies. But here’s what I don’t get…
If you, the individual rental owner, ask them to look after your keys and give them to your incoming guest, they will no doubt tell you they don’t do that. This seems slightly unfair to me. Why do they do this for the big boys, and leave the little guys to fend for themselves?
It gets even more odd when you look at the other police departments on Bogue Banks, none of them offer this service to anyone. Since when did it become a police matter to hand out keys anyway?
How are dispatchers supposed to be ready to take calls and efficiently route officers to emergencies when they have to do rental management compaies’ work?
I’m of the opinion that these companies are already being paid to perform these services thus need to follow through and have guests pick up the keys from them, not the police department. It seems like a waste of the town’s emergency personnel.
If you’re a taxpayer in Emerald Isle you may want to contact the Town Manager and express your feelings on this matter. his email is frush@emeraldisle-nc.org.
