Atlantic Beach
Atlantic Beach is on the eastern end of Bogue Banks. Emerald Isle is on the western end of the same barrier island we call Bogue Banks. The Atlantic is one side and the sound is on the other.
The town has a fairly large public access to the beach side. Atlantic Beach was first conceived as a vacation destination back in the 1870′s by a man named Appleton Oaksmith out of Carteret County. However he never was able to achieve his dream due to the death of four of his daughters on the fourth of July, 1879. Nonethless in the 1890′s Atlantic Beach became the rental destination it was destined to become. Now days thousands of families make their way to the area for summer vacations.
Most visitors to the town stay in vacation rentals, yet there are some excellent hotel accommodations in town. Just about anywhere you stay you’ll either be on oceanfront, oceanview, soundfront, or soundview. At the very minimum I would think you could hear the surf crashing the beach many nights.
Luckily there are quite a few restaurants in Atlantic Beach. So you won’t get bored of any one place. There’s everything from McDonald’s to gourmet. You’ll definitely want to visit a few of them.
One of the coast’s historic civil war forts is located at the easternmost end of the island. Ft. Macon is a very interesting and educational place to visit while in town.
Maybe you would like to book one of the fishing charters in town or just check out some fishing reports, but then you’ll need to go to a tackle shop.
Don’t forget to stop by one of the area surf shops and get what you need to rip it up in the surf. There’s a couple of them right in AB. Many other useful businesses in Atlantic Beach are here waiting to help you.
