Beaufort

Beaufort, NC is considered by many to be the heart of the Crystal Coast. it’s one of the oldest towns around, and has some very interesting history. Oh by the way we call it “bo-furt” not to be confused with “bee-you-furt” or Beaufort, South Carolina. Beaufort became an official seaport in 1722 (though it had been used as a port for many years before) and before that it wa known as fish town. In 1731 the town was deeded the “Old Burying Ground” which houses the eternal homes of soldiers from the revolutionary war of 1812 as well as the civil war.

Beaufort was also a favorite summer vacation spot for the upper class during the nineteenth century. During the Civil War the town was left mainly unscathed thanks to an early invasion of Union troops. After the war the town and its port resumed their duties as a center of vacations and trade. But after a time the port became less important and the commercial fishing industry took over the scene.

Beaufort remains a popular spot for Crystal Coast visitors to exerience. And while you’re here you really need to visit the Beaufort waterfront for lunch, a drink, or just to look at the boats. While you’re in town definitely visit the Maritime Museum as well.
